History of Jazz

Jazz is sometimes referred to as ‘America’s classical music‘. It has become a diverse genre with its roots in native American and African music; in particular, the blues, spirituals and rag time. Jazz music has become favorite music for almost all people in the world. It has become popular since it is not segmented, easy and soulful.

There was a period in history when Jazz music was banned during World War II when it was believed a plight for freedom against Hitler’s Nazi regime due to what it represents. Jazz music is the product of the US that was creatively invented by African Americans from their culture, and all the elements of the American life that influenced this style of music. The following are the jazz genres that has developed

Ragtime jazz

It is marked as the first form of jazz music. This is the original genre of American music which reached its popularity between 1897 and 1918. It was played in all over in bars and night clubs in America. After this period New Orleans Swing followed as the next genre of jazz. New Orleans and its music have a big influence on the jazz music evolution. This music usually played in Bourbon Street near the red light area in New Orleans.  Here is a sample of some ragtime Jazz.

Swing jazz

Swing jazz came as the next jazz genre. It is one of the jazz genre which developed in the early of 1930’s and became one different genre in 1935. European jazz continues the development of jazz in the Europe. Since the beginning of this development, it only existed in America. The development of jazz in Europe is marked by the existence of Quintte Du Hot in 1934. Django Reinhardt promotes gypsy jazz as the fusion of American swing and France dance music. Dixieland jazz genre which is also called hot jazz developed in the beginning of 20th century.

Cool jazz

It happened during the Second World War. In this period there was a huge mass of jazz musician invasion from California to New York. All of those musicians assimilate with bebop musician and spread its influence. Then Hard Bop comes as the combination of blues and rhythm and also the fusion of gospel music and blues especially on its saxophone and piano.

Free jazz

This comes as the new form of jazz. It happened during the 1950’s era until 1960’s era. This jazz genre arises as the protest of confining in straits of bebop, hard bop and moda jazz which developed in 1940. Then Latin jazz followed as the next generation of jazz, this genre combines African and Latin American rhythm with jazz music and classic harmony of Latin American music.

During 1960 until 1970 Souls Jazz comes as the development of hard bop which is strongly influenced by blues, gospel and also rhythm and blues. Souls jazz stresses its music on groove repetition and melody strident. After souls jazz, Jazz Fusion rises as the hybrid of other jazz genre, this genre combines all jazz genre such as funk, R&B, ska, electronic, and world music. Sometimes some element of pop, classic and folk song also influence on the development of jazz.

Fort Myers Music Walk

15 January, 19 February, 18 March, 15 April, 20 May, 17 June, 15 July, 19 August, and 16 September 2016. These are not just dates in Downtown Fort Myers River District, Florida. It is Festival here, with streets filled with music and people enjoying the Different forms of music and having a gala time.

Every Month, On Third Friday, The River District Alliance Organize a Music-Walk where, Musicians from far and wide come to the streets and started playing their heart out. This Musical Evening is witnessed by many local and people traveling from far. The Street become like a doorway to Heaven and is enjoyed by everyone present there. Listening to variety of Musical Instruments and musical forms from Ballet to Blues, and Minimal to Mazurka, and Rondo to Rock and Roll, It is like Heart stepping out and walking to the tunes of the music.

Also we have to pay no price for creating this valuable memory. It is Free of cost. Only Registration is required. This is also the peak time for shops and Restaurants, which take it as an opportunity for increasing their business and sell drinks and wines to already stupefied audience.


Every Month, the walk passes through different streets, of which walk map is first uploaded on social media and their websites. For Example The September-walk traverses through important squares like, ‘The Dancing Girdle’, ‘Barry Bledsoe’, ‘Damon DeLacruz’ , ‘Flash Back’ , and ‘Jackson Wolfe’ . The hospitality to the musicians is also appreciable. The crowd is very responsive and the amount of talented people in the walk is worth coming out for!

The River District Alliance also organize many other events like the Art Walk on every first Friday of the month. The Music Walk is the second most popular event of the town after the Art walk which attracts many people around the globe. Every Hotel and room is reserved for the music walk, hence, Advance booking is recommended for those who want to attend the event. Every Month the town hears to new talent with new energy, which will never let the joy of the walk fade away.
