Jazz is sometimes referred to as ‘America’s classical music‘. It has become a diverse genre with its roots in native American and African music; in particular, the blues, spirituals and rag time. Jazz music has become favorite music for almost all people in the world. It has become popular since it is not segmented, easy and soulful.
There was a period in history when Jazz music was banned during World War II when it was believed a plight for freedom against Hitler’s Nazi regime due to what it represents. Jazz music is the product of the US that was creatively invented by African Americans from their culture, and all the elements of the American life that influenced this style of music. It is marked as the first form of jazz music. This is the original genre of American music which reached its popularity between 1897 and 1918. It was played in all over in bars and night clubs in America. After this period New Orleans Swing followed as the next genre of jazz. New Orleans and its music have a big influence on the jazz music evolution. This music usually played in Bourbon Street near the red light area in New Orleans. Here is a sample of some ragtime Jazz.
Swing jazz came as the next jazz genre. It is one of the jazz genre which developed in the early of 1930’s and became one different genre in 1935. European jazz continues the development of jazz in the Europe. Since the beginning of this development, it only existed in America. The development of jazz in Europe is marked by the existence of Quintte Du Hot in 1934. Django Reinhardt promotes gypsy jazz as the fusion of American swing and France dance music. Dixieland jazz genre which is also called hot jazz developed in the beginning of 20th century.
It happened during the Second World War. In this period there was a huge mass of jazz musician invasion from California to New York. All of those musicians assimilate with bebop musician and spread its influence. Then Hard Bop comes as the combination of blues and rhythm and also the fusion of gospel music and blues especially on its saxophone and piano.
This comes as the new form of jazz. It happened during the 1950’s era until 1960’s era. This jazz genre arises as the protest of confining in straits of bebop, hard bop and moda jazz which developed in 1940. Then Latin jazz followed as the next generation of jazz, this genre combines African and Latin American rhythm with jazz music and classic harmony of Latin American music.
During 1960 until 1970 Souls Jazz comes as the development of hard bop which is strongly influenced by blues, gospel and also rhythm and blues. Souls jazz stresses its music on groove repetition and melody strident. After souls jazz, Jazz Fusion rises as the hybrid of other jazz genre, this genre combines all jazz genre such as funk, R&B, ska, electronic, and world music. Sometimes some element of pop, classic and folk song also influence on the development of jazz.
